“We are Agojie, we do not act alone, we move with one purpose, Alone you are weak. Alone you are killed or worse.”

For those of you who don’t recognize it, it’s from the movie The Woman KingThe general (Viola Davis) is speaking to a young recruit who has just disregarded orders and done what she (Thuso Mbedu) thought was best. If you haven’t seen this movie, do it. It’s good stuff.

Think about your life. How many things have you truly accomplished alone? Medical school? I don’t know about you but there is no way I would have survived it by myself. I needed the others in my class to help keep me afloat. Residency? I needed the attendings to teach me how to be a good doctor and surgeon as well as the other residents.

I dare say that in everything you have accomplished, yes, even learning to walk, you had help.

When it comes to investing, it is no different. I admit, I started out more on my own. Yes, I had someone to help me get started, but then I got cocky and thought I could do it on my own. Over the course of 4 years, I built quite the portfolio of single family homes and over the next year lost it all.

I realized, after a lot of soul searching, that I needed people smarter than me to teach me, just like in medical school and residency. And over the next several years I spent a lot of time with people a lot smarter than me in the real estate world. Whether their education came from books or on the street learning, I soaked it up.

It’s funny what movies show us while they’re entertaining and educating and giving us an excuse to eat buttered popcorn. The Woman King shows the importance of diversifying streams of income and preparing for financial challenges, the importance of investing in education and skills development. Yeah, I’ve watched it a few times to get all of that.

How much fun is it to learn a new skill? Most of us “educated folks” feel that making a mistake is a horrible thing to do. Guess what? That’s how you learn! We have to learn new skills related to investing for income and true diversification of our portfolios. Making mistakes is no fun and can be a very lonely experience. Especially in the world where perfection is what is cherished. It doesn’t have to be that way!

Come join your sisters, your very own Agojie, women warriors, making a difference in your life, their lives and the lives of our families. To top it all off, we will be working to change the world!
